Back to Blog Written on 16-Aug-2008 by malcylonWhat a big test we face in our first premiership game of the season. Martin O’Neill achieved 6th in the league last season and proved that his slow and careful squad building based around hard-working English players is paying off. Holding onto Gareth Barry so far will also be a boost to the rest of the team even though the saga seems set to continue.
We can only look on with envy at an owner who keeps himself to himself most of the time and seems to have footballing interests at heart (Randy Lerner: A Case Study on Foreign Ownership, Footballing World, Nov 2007). We’re already craving the stability he has brought to Villa.
City go into the match having avoided defeat on their last six league and cup visits to Villa Park but there is much to be concerned about, starting with the lack of fitness. I didn’t see the Villa match on Thursday for obvious reasons, but how our fitness and match sharpness compares to Villa will be key to this game.
Nowhere more so than in defence. With Richard Dunne suspended, Ben-Haim and Richards will have to be well enough versed with each other to cope with the pace Villa have up front. Young making his debut for Villa may keep Corluka fairly pinned back, which leaves Ball (probable left back) and Petrov as our most likely source of success out wide.
The remaining question is whether to start with two up front with Sturridge and Bojinov, or to leave Bojinov up on his own with Elano playing off him. Given the lack of striking replacements if things go wrong, I would tend to agree with Danny at ‘Bitter and Blue’ that it seems more likely Hughes will opt for safety first and keep Sturridge on the bench.
If there is any thread of light to go on then it will be the nature of the defeat on Thursday night that should jump the players into action. How the players approach this game and how the manager’s body language plays out throughout the match will be a strong indicator of our potential performance this season given off-the-field issues. We have the quality to match Villa on paper but it's whether that quality is 'switched on' or not. I’d be happy with a draw in our first game but happier still if the players put up a solid fight and show some real potential.

I also be glad if we should go away with a point but better still with a win.But all will depend on the performance of our players. They should go all out tomorrow and i believe we will go away with something good.Starting with Bojinov and strurridge upfront will be best for us tomorrow to keep the villa defense busy.

Hi Ghanaianblue,
Thanks for your comments. Going with the two up front might be the way to get an early goal. You could be right. It's then a question of getting the best out of Elano. I just can't wait to go to the game tomorrow!

I hope your optimism for the Villa match is rewarded malcylon.
I just feel that until all the people involved in City at this time put City first above all else, then the cloud that is currently over our club will curb and indeed stop dead any ambition we have for progress.
I pray hard that Hughes is supported by all right minded folk and allowed to do what we all already know he can do.
It is at this time we need to identify and weed out those individuals who cannot give 100% commitment.
Too long waiting for the tide to turn back into our favour, too many false dawns.
Owner and certain players have talked the talk, lets see them now walk the walk.
If they cannot commit to us, then go.
The question is a simple one.
City Till You Die?

JG- yup my pre-match comments definitely mask my feelings about the off-the-field situation. I'm preparing an article to cover that, but wanted to save the gloomy side until seeing the match. You're absolutely right and if anything many fans are still in denial about the strife we're in. I hope there's a good atmosphere and a win today. My Villa mate thinks our defense will cave in against their attack. Hmm.

Malc;
We will miss Dunne.
Haim and Richards should do okay.
I have just been reading Silvestre is a possible for us?
If that is the case it could be last chance today for Ball at left back.
Good news from this mornings papers is that Shinawatra reckons 10 to 15% of City is worth £80 million.
That puts the total worth around £500 million.
Who is this guy?
