Back to Blog Written on 10-Jan-2009 by malcylonWe are 10 days into the January transfer window and so far the key addition to Manchester City's first team has been Wayne Bridge. Bridge is a welcome boost to the left-back position that has been seen as a weakness in City's defense for some time.
MCFCfans has teamed up with Webjam's Football Channel to produce a Mid-Season Premiership Review of all Premiership clubs. Most City fans will agree that this season is turning out to be one of ups, downs, and much frustration. It is unclear how the remainder of the season will pan out but surely we are now at the defining moment in the season.
Today's postponement of the game away to Portsmouth was a major pain for City fans who we spoke to at Waterloo station. "I planned my whole weekend around this game," one disgruntled fan advised. We caught another Blue as he emerged from the underground none-the-wiser and told him the game had been called off - readers will be familiar with the feeling of finding out having made half of the trip. However, if there is a silver lining it is that City had key players side-lined for this game whereas Portsmouth had key players returning. If Portsmouth are knocked out of the cup by Bristol City on Tuesday 13th January, then Saturday 24th January is a likely re-match date. Otherwise the game will likely be played in February.
In the meantime, City fans voting in MCFCfans poll asking whether Mark Hughes should stay or go are divided 50/50 straight down the middle. But we're short on the vote count, so have your say now by going to our home page and voting! Join MCFCfans if you would also like to contribute your views to our MCFCfans Forum.
Have a great weekend, if you've made it back to Manchester that is.

The team that Sven left was in bad shape. I personally hope that Mark Hughes can make the psychological move from Blackburn to City. Admittedly this will have to happen sooner rather than later. Reasons? I think his ethics are up to it, especially to manage the team long term. He's in a similar British mould to Ferguson without being perhaps as cynical. He will make City hard to beat in the long run, and with a couple more flair players will be well placed to take on those who have dominated the CL cash, (and therefore most of the transfer funds), since the inception of the EPL.
There's not going to be anything like a level playing field in the EPL until a US-type draft system is introduced. Which will be fought against with cash by those who have the cash to defend their positions in the Champions League. In the meantime, it'll just be a straight fight.. Cash v More cash. Very basic no-holds-barred stuff, you might think, unless, as seems to be the case with City, the owners intend to develop or re-develop an area of the city. Philanthropy then comes into play, etc etc, with its attendant ramifications! For instance, are the supposed societal benefits going to be felt by the majority of the local population?
The investment in the club by the Abu Dhabi group is, on the face of it, a possible welcome emotional lift for all City supporters, and that would run into a minimum of 100,000 people, at a time when the economic health of the whole country is at the very least depressed, but what the real long term ramifications are is anyone's guess. We know full well, if you'll excuse the pun, that the oil is a finite resource; it will run out. Are we seeing Abu Dhabi transfer some of its present assets from the emptying bore holes of the Persian Gulf to future popluation 'wells' in the inner cities of northern Europe? Personally, I think so, and I can draw all kinds of conclusions from that, but this has now wandered off into the realms of philosophy, so I feel that I owe all of you an apology for that, and I'll honestly try not to do that if ever I come back to this page/site. I've been City since before I can remember, and it's been an ongoing circus for all of my life. That'll never change, and sometimes I feel the need to share that with other fans. I'll go back into my shell for a while now. Promise.

The facts speak for themselves.
Certain members of the current staff are not up to the job.
The Santa Cruz's and Parker's of this world should be brought in to improve the present situation.
Wake up! We are in a relegation fight. Make no mistake.
Yes. I believe MH is capable of sorting it all out, given the chance.
It will not happen overnight.
The squad needs to be constantly refreshed and improved to maintain competition for places.
As and when those "Big Names" become available, they will be signed.
This is only the beginning of a significant work in progress.
Patience and support are what are needed.
Remember, we were not that great immediately before MH, give him a chance and see who arrives this month and who leaves.
That will be the first real indicator of his long term intentions.
Make your decisions after that.

No worries mate. Comment posting on blog posts is the one area I've permissioned the general public to make comments (ie not the forum which is only for members) because I think if blogs are published everyone should get their say. Not being a blog snob or anything but I'm trying to set the precedent that the forums don't turn into the kind of mud slinging swearing matches that others have!
