The respect handshake prior to the City match against Arsenal

What a fantastic victory against Arsenal.  We really did Sheikh up the Gooners.  But what a shame it has been over-shadowed by reporting that can only be described as totally un-balanced.

City have reluctantly accepted the FA charge for the stamp on Van Persie, almost certainly the right decision in the circumstances.  The situation that remains with the goal celebration is an altogether harder one to judge from the club's perspective. Can City really expect a fair hearing at appeal in light of the totally un-balanced reporting in the press?

It's a mystery why there has been so little coverage and comment of the behaviour of a small section of Arsenal fans at the front of the away end.  Their reaction was of the kind I have never seen at a match in my life, with the exception of a fairly large riot at a derby match in Brazil.  It was completely over-the-top and reflective of a culture among a minority at the club who believe that player hate campaigns are de rigeur.

No mention in the press reporting of Van Persie's celebration in front of the City fans when Arsenal equalised. Not one that I have noticed.  City fans, impeccably behaved in recent history, watched aghast at the reaction in the away end to Adebayor's celebration.  When Van Persie trooped over to the home-end corner of the Colin Bell stand did you see objects and chairs flying towards the pitch?  Not a bit of it.  No crowd rush, barely even a reaction and yet this has been nowhere in the reporting of the Adebayor celebration.  No mention either of Henry's unpunished celebration in front of Spurs fans in 2002.

If any readers have in fact found a balanced report of this incident, please could they post a link as we would like to congratulate the reporter involved.

City fans are fair-minded supporters with a passion and love for the game.  We're light-hearted and full of good humour. We don't believe in player hate campaigns.  We don't take life so damn seriously that we need to rush to the front of the away end and knock a steward out.  Sure, Adebayor's celebration was perhaps over-the-top and most City fans would probably accept that.  What we don't accept is the relentless attack against our football club. In this particular case, the un-balanced reporting of this incident has the real potential to make idiotic so-called fans of clubs everywhere to think that a reaction like that is completely acceptable.  We appeal to quality reporters everywhere to stop and think before getting caught up in the anti-City hysteria that your industry peers seem intent on whipping up.  Our time has come, let us enjoy it.

There is a campaign underway to highlight inconsistencies in the way the FA deal with matters relating to 'Adebayor' type incidents in relation to the so-called Sky 4 clubs. Read:

    Great article by the way.

    City Slicker says:

This reporting has been moronic. The only commentators I have heard express a reasoned and balanced view were Spoony (on 606), Steve Claridge and now Harry Redknapp.

There is clearly another agenda at work here and while the media groupies of the big four have to watch as City do their stuff on the pitch, the only way they can get back at the Club is by attacking Adebayor.

Where is the FA (how well chosen those tow initials are) action over Van Persies behaviour, both in swearing at the City fans and trying to incite them and in his disgraceful "tackle" that caused Adebayor to retaliate? Lets see those incidents replayed time and time again.

The racist chanting by Arsenal's fans, whether a minority or not, is again something that should (but will not) be acted upon.

Comments by the FA and the Premier League, prior to charges being brought, hardly suggest a fair and balanced approach. Time for City fans to stick together and keep throwing this hypocrisy back in their bloated arse licking faces..

    Johnny Crossan says:

What everyone needs to realise is that if Man City replace one of the big four in the Champs League, that club could face financial ruin given the debt levels that all of them run. Hence they, and their media & FA allies will seize on anything and everything to do City down. We are already singled out by absurd "anti-billionaire" financial fairplay measures in Europe where we are also seen as a massive threat to the established order. Just think, why should any club not have a benefactor? Because the elite clubs don't like it of course, because they haven't got one. High stakes my fellow blues, just support Adebayor, our manager, our owner, our club to the hilt, they need your support if we are going to break the mould.

If I was a newspaper editor though, faced with the decision on whether to be biased in favour of a debt-ridden incumbent top four champions league club or whether actually to applaud the success of a wealthy up-and-coming team that choose to play attacking football, why would I choose the former and attack the latter? I don't get it!

The FA is run by the 'big 4' so why should anyone expect anything other than a bias towards the aforementioned 'big 4'.

    Karl [http://www.algorfarealestate.com] says:

As a blue, I totally agree with Harry Rednapp, he seems to be only one of the reasoned voices in the premier league. I feel though as it pains me, that his words and the words of many others who-in an objectional view to the events of saturday- will not be heeded and only because the sheer top 4 biased media pressure, the FA will not deem any investigation necessary.
It is blatantly obvious, that any other team outside the top 4 are there to only make up the numbers.
It has been going on a long time now, and it will continue to do so, as long as the spineless jellyfish who run the FA carry on being bullied by the top 4 clubs and UEFA.
ALL the other clubs within the Premier League have to come together to highlight this totally unbalanced favouritism within the league within the FA and the massively biased media.
When ITV had the rights to the Premier League, a letter was written in to ask, why was it, that every week, the main games shown was only of the top 4?
The response was that ITV feel that they give an equal showing of all games every week, however due to highlighting constraints, they could only show a couple of games a week as main games. ITV also said as an example the main game the week coming was at Portsmouth.

However, that week Portsmouth were just happening to be playing Arsenal!

Former-blue-turned-red Oliver Holt condemned Ade for his celebration as an affront to all the non-racist Arsenal fans in the away end (most of them must have been singing aong because I could hear them loud and clear in the Family Stand). He then went on to contrast this with Cantona's kung-fu kick- saying that was totally justified in that it singled out a deserving racist!

Tony Cascarino in the Times on the 13th was pretty good.

The whole system is a farce. How can you have people like Richard Scudamore hed of Premier league voicing his opinion before the process has taken place. As if that isn't placing pressure on the panel to do what he thinks. Can't see what can really be done about the press, but people in positions of power within the football world should not be coming out and commenting before a ruling has been made.

    Martin Grayfield says:

I agree with Tom Booth, the new Exec Chair or whatever he is Watmore came out with some stuff before a decision was made. So your boss has said he thinks the "whatever man city player did!" is bad etc and you are then as an em,ployee of the FA asked to decide whether disciplinary action should be taken.

We have a rule in English Law of not being judge and jury in your own case. In this instance we certainly see the FA seeming to act as prosecutor judge and jury too.

I thought though that Martin Samuels was good in the Mail, certainly on the celebration issue.

In this case i am quite disappointed that the FA did not charge RVP on 2 counts. Firstly his 2 footed tackle - ok it missed, but there is the what if it hadn't issue.

Secondly going public so quickly and so intemperently on the issue. It is plain from his attitude to EA that he didn't want to have anything to do with him from the start. He didn't really engage in the handshake etc that EA offered at the start. Was downright abusive to our fans after his goal (which you rightly point out city fans laughed off) and then lied about EA coming over after and apologising.

The sooner a transparent and independant prosecution and decision making process is introduced the better. It seems strange as well to me that the FA can charge over an incident the ref deemed worthy of a yellow card but they can look to up it later. Whilst on the other hand players cannot appeal against yellow cards at all. I have seen many games where players have been wrongly booked- not least the people booked for complaining about goals that never were - it only seems right if the FA can look to up it that the players should be able to reduce plainly incorrect ones.

    zorrin Drax says:

Try to imagine Arsenal conceding 4 goals, with no sour grapes. It just wouldn't happen.

They said Ade is lazy, good riddance etc.

So seeing him bust a gut to get to the away end and celebrate really cheered me up. The constant press reporting is reminding gooner fans of a match they were hoping to forget. Ade was in his own stadium, and didn't stray outside the area of his own pitch. He didn't swear, throw coins into the crowd. He just looked at the Arsenal fans and gave them a big wide smile. He was awarded a yellow card, and it should stop there.

I know his celebration was wrong. But it was so satisfying. Thanks, big fella.

    scribbs says:

I think what everyone wants is consistancy and fairness. I haven't a problem about the three match ban (although I think it's wrong), but if Ade is banned for three games for his actions then van Persie should get the same for his foul mouthed goal celebration in front of some City fans and his two-footed tackle that started this furore.
With everyone including the tea lady at MK Dons!!!!, having a say before the 'trial' Ade was always going to be suspended, come what may.
All I want is fairness, but being City we won't get it.
Surely it would be better concentrating on finding the mongrel Arsenal supporters, who (a) racially chanted Abe, and (b) knocked the City official out. When van Persie did his foul-mouthed celebration, did the City fans react like those from Arsenal?????
I have never been a fan of big money in soccer, it causes more trouble than it's worth for me, but I hope our owners plough so much money into the club, that we wipe the smug smirks of the faces of the big four and the FA(I wonder what FA stands for?). How about FUTILE AND ARROGANT!!! Had another in mind, but it's a family show!!!!
Wonder what everyone will say when we beat United with one fit striker....I wait with baited breath!!!!

    malcylon says:

Yeah and if that one fit striker happens to score the winner 10 minutes into injury time making Alex Ferguson's timepiece explode, then who knows what celebration we have in store!

To be fair I'd be happy with a point but I'm dreaming of a win.
